Voltage Optimisation through transformer supply (fixed tap)

Our highly efficient Wilson e4 range of amorphous core distribution transformers comes with an additional de-energised tap changer setting at no extra cost (+7.5%). This enables you to optimise voltage supply from 415V to 5 different voltages from 386V to 437V according to your site’s needs wherever your incoming supply is at medium voltage without the need for additional equipment.

Our Wilson e4+ Ultimate Low Loss Amorhpus OLTC transformers come with MR Ecotap VPD on-load tap changer that allows you to manage the voltage without any power disruption. The options are 9 or 17 tap positions on the HV side between -6% and 6% custom configured to your site needs.

Apart from being a particularly cost-effective way of optimising site voltage, the transformer will integrate smoothly with your existing installations, avoiding additional system losses and minimising space requirements.

Voltage Regulation through transformer supply (dynamic regulation via OLTC)

Where site supply voltages fluctuate or a constant (+/- 1%) output voltage is required, the Wilson e4+ transformer comes with a 9 or 17 position on load tap changer (OLTC). This adjusts the taps automatically to maintain a constant secondary output voltage.

Typical applications are sites with irregular supply patterns including random peaks and troughs as well as distinct day and night patters, highly sensitive operating equipment requiring stable supply voltage and improving site resilience in view of increasingly dirty supply from the grid.

Case Study - Dovecote - Wilson e3+

Inrush currents from motor loads at Dovecote Park were creating short-duration voltage dips on the low voltage network. Due to the proximity of a wind turbine on the 11kV network, the effect of these events was amplified. The worst-case scenario at Dovecote Park prevailed during typical peak demand periods, when the turbine was not generating power.

The existing transformer was replaced with a 3MVA Wilson e3+
Ultra Low Loss Amorphous Transformer coupled with a 9-position on-load vacuum tap changer. The primary purpose being to reduce the grid swing and mitigate the risk of failure to critical plant and equipment from under-voltage. This results in 68,426kWh, 14.4 tCO2 and £12,316 annual savings.

Case Study - ASDA - Wilson e2+

The commitments made by ASDA to reduce their energy usage lead them to discover our previous range super low loss amorphous Wilson e2+ transformer. Not only does the transformer help reduce overall energy losses in the amorphous core, but the additional Voltage Regulation System means ASDA can control its voltage output dynamically, giving their stores extra power as and when they need it.

The installed distribution transformers have cut energy usage by 7%, saving them over £25,000 a year in unnecessary costs. The project has nearly paid for itself twice over since installation, and with our recommended minimum transformer life of 25 years they will remain an excellent long term investment.
